What Is a Hernia Mesh?

Hernia mesh is a medical product that surgeons use to repair weakened tissue where hernias develop. It is used in both laparoscopic hernia repair surgery and open surgery. Hernias have a high rate of recurrence, and the purpose of a mesh is to reinforce the hernia repair to reduce the likelihood of a recurrence. There are many brands and types of hernia mesh. The type of mesh that doctors use will depend upon the type of hernia.

Hernia mesh may be made of synthetic material or of animal tissue. Synthetic mesh is made of materials such as polypropylene and other plastics. An absorbable mesh is made from animal skin that has been disinfected for medical uses. The permanent mesh will provide lasting support, while the absorbable mesh is designed to break down gradually as new tissue growth occurs.

Hernia Mesh Side Effects

While hernia mesh can be very effective in repairing hernias and preventing recurrence, there are risks to using it. Pain is a common side effect and more serious complications can include bleeding, perforation of intestines and other organs, bowel obstruction, and unintended adhesion to organs, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). These are extremely serious complications that can require surgery to repair.

Even after corrective surgeries, problems may persist. Nerve damage, impaired organ function, and other internal damage may occur. Mesh can break apart. It can migrate from the intended position to other parts of the body. It also may shrink after implantation. Any of these can cause serious complications that can jeopardize your health.

FDA Warnings & Subsequent Hernia Mesh Recall

The FDA has warned about the dangers of many hernia mesh products. When the FDA investigated mesh products, they found that many had problems in design and manufacture that could lead to serious complications. These included perforation of surrounding tissue, adhesion (when two organs stick together because of the mesh), infection, and recurrence of hernias.

As a result of the problems with certain types of hernia mesh brands, the FDA took action. The FDA recalled several mesh brands including C-QUR for problems related to the quality and safety of the product. In other cases, such as Physiomesh, manufacturers have recalled products after complaints and concerns were reported to the FDA.

Many of the complications related to surgical mesh have involved products that have been removed from the market, according to the FDA. Recalled mesh products were the main cause of complications related to bowel obstruction and blockage, the FDA said. However, many people still have recalled types of mesh implanted in their bodies and may still suffer complications in the future.

Hernia Mesh Lawsuits

Given the complications that hernia repair with mesh failure can cause, it’s not surprising that at any time there are hundreds of defective hernia mesh cases going on around the country. These cases have been aimed at four major designers and manufacturers of hernia mesh: Atrium, Bard, Covidien, and Ethicon. These companies have designed, manufactured, and marketed hernia mesh that has caused harm to patients.

Two of the most prominent brands of hernia mesh that have reportedly caused serious health problems are C-QUR and Physiomesh.

  • C-QUR was a line of synthetic, permanent mesh designed and manufactured by Atrium. After the release of C-QUR, patients began to experience serious complications. Patients were suffering from severe problems after their hernia surgeries including bowel perforation and other major complications.

In 2012, the FDA warned Atrium about problems with their product and issues related to its manufacture. In 2013, the FDA issued a Class 2 recall of the product due to issues with the mesh’s coating that could make the mesh more likely to cause infection. In 2016, the FDA obtained a permanent injunction against the production of C-QUR due to the manufacturing and packaging of the mesh.

Atrium and its C-QUR products are facing several lawsuits across the country. If you are a patient who has received a C-QUR mesh implant during hernia repair surgery, you may be eligible to pursue compensation for your injuries.

  • Physiomesh™ Flexible Composite Mesh is a line of hernia mesh produced and marketed by Ethicon. Physiomesh Flexible Composite Mesh was a mesh made of polypropylene and coated with a substance called monocryl that is supposed to reduce inflammation and reduce the issues with adhesion to internal organs. However, Physiomesh caused a number of problems for patients including severe inflammatory responses. After problems arose, Ethicon withdrew the product from the market.

Physiomesh is also facing multiple lawsuits across the United States. If you, or a loved one, received Physiomesh Flexible Composite Mesh during a hernia repair and complications occurred, you may be entitled to demand compensation.

These and other mesh brands have known issues that can cause severe and lasting damage to patients. If you’ve had a hernia repair that involved mesh, and you have suffered injuries, contact a hernia mesh lawyer to review your case.
