IVC Filter Lawyer
Have you been diagnosed with IVC filter complications?
If so, you may be owed damages.
A number of these devices, made by C. R. Bard and Cook Medical, are believed to be the cause of hundreds of serious injuries in patients who have had the devices implanted.
What is an IVC filter?
An IVC filter, or Inferior Vena Cava filter, is a small spider-like device that is implanted in the largest vein, just below the kidneys, called the inferior vena cava. The filter is designed to capture blood clots migrating from the legs before they can go to the heart, lungs or brain, and potentially cause a heart attack or pulmonary embolism. The IVC filter is meant to block the movement of the blood clot, allowing normal blood to flow around the trapped clot. Over time, natural anticoagulants in the blood break down the clot.
IVC Filter Side Effects
When certain IVC Filters entered the market, the FDA (U.S. Food and Drug Administration) began getting reports of problems caused by some of these filters. The problems included the devices breaking, fracturing and moving to different parts of the body, resulting in punctured organs or blood vessels, and even death.
When an IVC filter fractures or migrates, it can cause a wide range of symptoms, including:
- Chest Pain
- Heart Rhythm Problems
- Neck Pain
- Shortness of Breath
The symptoms can be indicators of heart damage, lung damage, internal bleeding, or a pulmonary embolism. These can result in stroke or death.
The product names of the implants that are the focus of ongoing litigation are:
- The Bard Recovery filter
- The Bard G2 filter
- The Bard G2 Express filter
- The Cook Gunther Tulip filter
- The Cook Celect filter
IVC Filters Risks and Legal Claims
Thousands of patients across the United States had IVC filters implanted without proper knowledge that they were at risk of severe medical complications from these devices. The device manufacturers need to be held responsible for their negligence, be forced to inform doctors and patients of the risks associated with the filters, and ultimately take their defective products off the market entirely.
Plaintiffs began filing lawsuits across the country claiming the filters caused harm and death, alleging manufacturers’ negligence, failure to warn, design defects, manufacturing defects, breach of implied warranty and negligent misrepresentation on the part the companies and their subsidiaries.
You or a family member may be one of those who have suffered injury because of one of these devices and is owed compensation.
